Freedom

Interesting how in a consumer society the term "free" always gets turned into thinking about money. America was supposed to be a free society… free speech, freedom to think and believe what one wanted to believe, freedom to assemble, freedom to defend oneself from others including an oppressive government. How little our population appears to appreciate this history and the "Spirit of 1776" as we are quick to try to be like Europeans and other more oppressive countries!

Free Software

Free as in FREE SPEECH and FREEDOM!

End-user rights or freedoms define Free Software and I would argue that must be viewed as inalienable.

"Free software" is a matter of liberty, not price.

To understand the concept, you should think of "free"
as in "free speech," not as in "free beer."

Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change

and improve the software. More precisely, it refers to four kinds of freedom,

for the users of the software:

* The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).

* The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1).
Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

* The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).

* The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements
(and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole
community benefits (freedom 3).
Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

A program is free software if users have all of these freedoms.
Thus, you should be free to redistribute copies, either with or without modifications,
either gratis or charging a fee for distribution, to anyone anywhere.

Being free to do these things means (among other things) that
you do not have to ask or pay for permission.

GNU Public License

The diagram by Chao-Kuei explains the different categories of software. It's available as an XFig file, as a JPEG picture and as a 1.5 magnified PNG image, under the terms of any of the GNU GPL v2 or later, the GNU FDL v1.2 or later, or the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike v2.0 or later. See categories of software licensing.

GNU/Linux

If a program is free, then it can potentially be included in a free operating system such as GNU, or free versions of the GNU/Linux system such as gNewSense.

EMACS

I love Emacs! It has so many useful functions like keeping track of agenda items.

  • Org-Mode
Emacs is extensible. By far my favorite extension is org-mode.

Xournal

I transformed a used (~$500) Motion LE1600 into a GNU/Linux Tablet Slate Personal Computer. Xournal and CellWriter help to make it a useful tool. Oh and I must not forget to mention a wonderful tool that I have not experimented with enough - be sure to check out the tips and documentation pages for EasyStroke. Eventually, I'll purchase the keyboard/cover.

GNUPG

I truly love this tool. I think GNUPG has a bright future in medicine for exchanging data and communications between patients and their physicians.

TRUECRYPT

Another useful program. Truecrypt is a program that permits encryption that is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent. Ideal for creating mountable portable secure storage solutions - like transporting health records.

E-MAIL

I'm in the process of moving my e-mail to Emacs (when I have time and find the right help). Currently I am enjoying enigmail/thunderbird for signed/encrypted e-mails.

CHAT

Presently, Pidgin is coming in useful for chatting with friends and family who use google e-mail/google talk. I believe it also permits GNUPG as a plug-in for secure chats. So far have not had any success with file-sharing over Pidgin and the Google-talk interface. So these two issues (encryption and encrypted file-sharing) are works in progress. A while ago I tried Wija on an XP machine with some success. Did not get it to work well on GNU/Linux yet.

BROWSERS

I've used many browsers. If it were Free Software (GNU Public Licensed) then I'd use Opera. Since it is not I use Epiphany and GNUicecat.

Free Society

Eternally, a work in progress…

Information

I think this article says my thoughts best about how scientific research is being restricted from the general public's consumption with a weak debate (thank God for Richard Stallman).

Free Market Economics

Given the economic crisis and governmental interventions this is timely. Personally, I support the gold standard (sound money) and find the "fair tax" and "flat tax" schemes unfair and not-flat. I think everyone should read Frederic Bastiat's works (especially his essay "What Is Money?"). It is in Volume 1 of his 2 volume collection at the Ludwig Von Mises Institute's website.

Austrian Free Market Economics

The Ludwig Von Mises Institute has a Blog and many books and media for learning about this important school. The main economic school of thought that has created a great deal of problems and continues to advise (unopposed) world governmental leadership strategies are the Keynesian economists. As we head towards hyperinflation thanks to a fiat monetary system, watch them create a global fiat currency to "reset" the economic doomsday clock. The reality is the theft taking place as all human beings are taxed. The first recipients of fiat money get the most "bang for the buck" compared to those of use lay folk who get the money later while prices rise and our money is worth less and less.

Politics

Libertarianism

Lew Rockwell has a nice site and podcast. Anti-state, anti-war, and pro-market.

U.S.A. Constitution

Everyone should keep up with important legislation. I find the thomas.gov site helpful. It is important to Audit the Federal (it isn't federal) Reserve! Dr. Ron Paul (republican congressman from Texas) has a strong record of being pro-constitution and pro-individual liberty.

Doctor Ron Paul's Campaign For Liberty

LINKS

FRIENDS

Special thanks to these fine human beings who in giving of themselves freely to strangers have helped many and made themselves worthy friends.
Fravia+ searchlores R.I.P. (b. August 30 1952 - d. May 3, 2009) Swansong Sorely missed, but his spirit, site and wit will live on.
Richard M. Stallman I can't give him enough thank GNUs for his 25+ years of work for the GNU and FSF. His thoughtful, kind and firm support of freedom in his writings, speeches, and personal e-mails have directed me towards a better understanding of Free Software philosophy and ethics!
Matthew Lundin Wonderfully kind, his generosity including his own Emacs dot file (.emacs) and kind guidance helped make this site's creation with Emacs org-mode not only possible but painless, simple and elegant!
John Sullivan His generous work with the FSF and help is greatly appreciated.
Mark Valenti's Liberty Page A truly kind and diplomatic person. Mark has helped steer me to information about Free Market economics and Liberty. As the business manager at the office where I trained in Family Medicine he helped role-model true excellence in leadership, helping me to become more knowledgeable and understanding of the business side of medicine.
Other Physicians:
Neil Shulman, M.D. (Doc Hollywood) The physician, author and comedian - president of the Patch Adams Fan Club - truly a gifted man who has dedicated his work to improving everyone's health literacy.
Jay Parkinson, MD+MPH An innovative and creative physician. His kindness has helped encourage me to pursue my own independent dreams in practicing medicine from the heart and with freedom.
